Pages from my sketchbook
My sketchbook practice has become more important of late. This is the place where I can work out compositions, play and explore an idea or try out new products. The manner of working in a sketchbook makes the art less precious so I feel I can loosen up and let the ideas flow. This also is a place I come to contemplate the what ifs in my process…What if I try yellow? What if I make bolder strokes? What if I scratch into the surface?
I can carry my art with me and sketch on site to capture the feeling of a scene. These brief sketches cement the time of day, who I’m with, the weather, the mood. I’ll write notes in the margins to reference later.
The amount of learning I get from this practice is invaluable. So open your sketchbooks and go for it.
